Kauri (Agathis Australis) is a species of coniferous tree that grows only in the subtropical climate of New Zealand. The first of these appeared during the Jurassic period somewhere between 190 and 135 million years ago. They are the largest trees in the world in terms of stem size, up to 9 meters. Kauli reach a height of about 70 meters. About 50,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, a series of unexplained disasters dipped the entire kauris forests into water and mud. The special properties of the mud and the absolute lack of oxygen literally conserved these plants. Trapped in swamps for 30 to 50,000 years, and due to the chemical processes of decomposition and petrification, they have allowed them to remain untouched until today. Unique is the fact that, despite being in mud for thousands of years, the trunks are perfectly preserved and of the same quality as the timber that has just been harvested.
